Hackacity is a datathon for data scientists and data enthusiasts. During one day the participants can play with the city’s data and come up with solutions that will trigger the improvement of the quality of life of the citizens and for those who come to visit it. This year's edition will have a special focus on citizen engagement, environment, mobility and tourism.
Hackacity gives you the opportunity to work side by side with other data scientists and data enthusiasts, to share ideas and get to know fellow professionals. All of this while challenging yourself and using data to create a better city.
Create your team and join this challenge to:
- Evaluate and improve the data generated by the city;
- Build tools, analysis and models, based on Porto’s open data, that can support the development of solutions useful for the city’s citizens;
- Discover valid, potentially useful and comprehensible new patterns for this data.
In order to ensure the impact of Hackacity, by the end of the competition, all the teams should also provide an output in any form which can document the idea - It can be a blog article, open-source code, etc.
Even before the competition starts, communication channels and teams will be setup. All the teams will have access to information about the data that will be provided and you can immediately start brainstorming about the challenge you'll be tackling. This way, on the competition day, all your concentration can be focused on exploring the data and preparing your final presentation.

Hackacity was launched in 2015 in Porto when 7Graus and the Municipality of Porto decided to trigger the technological community to create solutions for the city.
The Municipality of Porto has embraced a policy strategy aimed at applying measures for the implementation of Smart City principles. The city is becoming a living lab and big data is being generated. This data has to be tested so it can be used to improve the quality of life in the city. Hackacity was born from this effort, proving that the city can be a tech, innovative and creative entrepreneurial space.
Several cities joined after this first edition, from Europe to Brazil, replicating and adjusting Hackacity to their own contexts.
Now, on the fourth edition in Porto, we want to raise the bar and increase the technological and intelectual challenge of the event. Let's build a smarter city together!
